Our History
Navantia UK LTD is the United Kingdom subsidiary of Spanish Navantia, incorporated in 2022 to work with UK industrial partners in shipbuilding, defence and offshore wind energy.
Navantia's roots
Navantia’s roots go back to the XVII Century, when the Spanish Navy decided to build the first modern shipyard in Spain: In 1717, Quartermaster General José Patiño ordered the construction of the first modern shipyard in our country, the Real Arsenal de la Carraca, which was followed in 1731 by Cartagena and later, in 1750, by Ferrol. These military arsenals were dedicated to the construction and repair of the Spanish Navy ships. The same dams and terraces that now give life to the most technologically advanced ships were also witnesses to historic milestones such as the development of the great line ships of the great 18th century ships of the line, the first mechanically propelled ships, and the first electric propulsion submarine in the world, the “Isaac Peral”.
Heir to a long history of both military and civil shipbuilding, Navantia was born as a company in 2005, merging the two traditions of the Spanish shipbuilding industry and creating a strategic company for Spanish Defence.
18th century
Navantia also has a long-standing tradition in manufacturing and refurbishing artillery, a legacy that dates back to the 18th century. The company has extensive experience in the design, development, production and integration of Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), Combat Systems and Integrated Communications Systems, among others. Navantia is the designer and manufacturer of combat systems CATIZ and SCOMBA for the Spanish Navy.
21st century
In the 21st century, Navantia has developed new business lines to provide value-added solutions to its customers: from comprehensive lifecycle support, to ship life extension, training, digital solutions, global propulsion and power generation.
Navantia has also gained extensive experience in Transfer of Technology and Knowledge and Localization programmes including:
- Three Hobart class AWD destroyers for the Royal Australian Navy
- Two Canberra class LHD vessels for the Royal Australian Navy
- Five Fridtjof Nansen class frigates for the Royal Norwegian Navy
- One LHD vessel for the Turkish Navy
- Five Avante 2200 corvettes for the Royal Saudi Naval Forces
2014
Navantia started a new business line in the emerging offshore wind market. Today it is a global provider of all types of foundations (jackets, floating foundations, and monopiles). In 2022 the green energies line became Navantia Seanergies.
2023
Navantia launched monodon, an open innovation cell with the aim of promoting research and experimentation with disruptive technologies and speeding up their implementation within the company.
