Navantia UK recognised as one of the Top 100 apprenticeship employers

Navantia UK has been named as one of the UK’s Top 100 apprenticeship employers in a prestigious ranking by The Sunday Times.

This recognition follows the growth of an apprenticeship programme built over the last three years at Navantia UK’s four yards – Appledore, Arnish, Belfast and Methil.

Navantia UK presently employs 184 apprentices, representing nearly a fifth of the company’s workforce. The group recently announced it was recruiting 55 apprentices at Belfast and Appledore to work on the Fleet Solid Support programme, under which Navantia UK is building three vessels to support the Royal Navy’s Carrier Strike Group.

Apprenticeships at Navantia UK work on projects across the defence, energy and maritime sectors. They are in a variety of roles and disciplines and are taught skills including fabrication, welding, electrical systems, mechanical engineering and computer aided design as well as Higher Level and IT apprenticeships.

Katherine Thorn, Head of Talent and Culture at Navantia UK, said: “We’re delighted that Navantia UK has been recognised as one of the UK’s top apprenticeship employers. This is a tribute to the work we’ve done to bring new talent into our business and to create opportunities allowing colleagues to earn while they learn.

“Our apprenticeship programme underlines our commitment to developing local talent at each of our yards. Skills are the cornerstone of the future of our business and apprenticeships enable people to gain valuable qualifications while carrying out practical, hands-on work alongside experienced colleagues.

“Congratulations to all of our apprentices who have contributed to the success of our programme, and to the team that supports them. Awards such as this one will help to draw further talented applicants to Navantia UK.”

The Sunday Times’ list is drawn from across the UK economy – ranging from the armed forces to hospitality, retail, professional services and industry. The list is topped by the British Army, which recruits 5,400 apprenticeships annually. Navantia UK ranks 66th overall and is in third place in the ‘engineering and industrial’ category.
